Math help in Missouri City, TX

If your child is a reader, he or she is already on their way to a stronger vocabulary. Reading exposes your child to a far wider range of words than conversation and media alone. At The Tutoring Center here in Missouri City, Texas, our Geniuses in Training Reading Program ™, provides the necessary skills to improve your child's vocabulary. We would like to take this opportunity to share some tips on what you can do at home to boost your child’s vocabulary.

The Dictionary

Keep the latest edition of the English dictionary available to your child. Create a daily game of having your child randomly open the dictionary while blindfolded and pointing to six or more words while you  read the definitions out loud and then write them down. By the way, having one of those huge, table sized dictionaries makes this game even better. Have your child write a vivid story containing these words. The more nonsensical, the better.

Word Games

Play time-tested classic word games with your child, such as Hangman, Crosswords, Word Search, Fluster, or Scrabble. Research the latest or most popular online games as well. There are more than enough to choose from! Make sure these games are age-appropriate and that your child's online profile is locked, so he does not stray from the objective.

Writing, Writing, and even More Writing

Have your child keep a journal, write a blog online, or create an actual printed and bound book of poetry and/or stories. Encourage him to write full words and sentences when texting or e-mailing. Teach your child how to proof-read his own writing. And last but not least, tell your child, "Do not be afraid to make mistakes." That fear may keep him or her from writing well or at all. Language takes a huge amount of practice to master, and mistakes are part of the learning process.
