Math help in Missouri City, TX

06/09/2015
School is out and it is time for summer vacation! During these summer months, you may find yourself at home more often with your children. If your child struggles with science, summer vacation can be a great time for him to develop renewed curiosity and interest in the subject. Use this time to make science fun with your children. Everyone is familiar with the baking soda and vinegar volcano, why not try out a few new experiments at home? When your children start to get restless, here are a few fun science activities you can do around the house.

Rock Candy

Growing rock candy is a fun and tasty activity. All you need is a wooden skewer, clothespin, 1 cup of water, 2-3 cups of sugar and a tall narrow glass jar. Boil the water and add in the sugar a half cup at a time. Let the sugar dissolve before adding in another half cup. Repeat until no more sugar will dissolve in the water. Let the sugar water cool for about 20 minutes. Help your child pour the sugar water into the glass jar. Clip the clothespin to the bottom of the skewer like a handle and place the skewer so that it is hanging down inside the glass jar, in the sugar water solution. You do not want the skewer to touch the sides or bottom of the glass jar. Place the jar in a safe location where it will not be disturbed. Watch the sugar crystals grow over the next 3-7 days.

Slime

Keep your kids entertains for hours with homemade slime. For this experiment you will need Elmer’s glue, 2 disposable cups, food coloring, water, borax powder, a plastic spoon for stirring and a tablespoon for measuring. Stir in a spoonful of Borax into a cup of water in one of the disposable cups. In the other disposable cup, add about 1 inch of glue, 3 tablespoons of water, and a few drops of food coloring and stir. Add 1 tablespoon of the Borax solution into the glue/water solution to create the slime. After forming the slime, let it sit for about 30 seconds before you pull it out of the cup to play with it.

Hopefully these science experiments will help your child realize the wonders of science. If you find your child struggling with math or science, we are here to help.
